Heritage Beef

Florida Cracker cattle

One of the oldest cattle breeds in America — lean, horned, and perfectly at home on Florida's land.

A Rare Legacy

A breed as old as Florida ranching

Florida Cracker cattle are among the oldest breeds in the United States, descended from the cattle Spanish explorers brought to Florida in the 1500s. Left to roam wild, they adapted over centuries to the region's heat, humidity, and sandy ground — living off whatever the land offered.

That resilience made them the backbone of early Florida ranching. Today the breed is recognized as rare heritage stock, and keeping it alive is part of why we raise them.

Living on the Land

Raised on Florida's wild forage

For centuries these cattle lived on wild native plants rather than cultivated feed. Alongside native grasses, they browse woody plants like winged sumac, sweetgum, muscadine vine, and sweetleaf — a broad diet that carried the breed through droughts, storms, and lean seasons.

It's a diet that ties them intrinsically to Florida's natural systems — and gives the beef a lean, distinctive character all its own.

Partners in the Land

Grazing that gives back

The herd earns its keep as a land-stewardship partner. Rotational grazing mimics the way wild herds once moved across the land, giving each pasture time to recover — while their manure naturally feeds the soil and the forage that grows from it.

The result is a healthier landscape, good for the cattle, the plants, and everything that shares the ground with them.

Conservation

Protecting a rare breed

With only limited populations left across the state, the Florida Cracker is a breed worth protecting. River Woods Ranch keeps a dedicated herd to safeguard and grow their numbers — preserving both the genetics and the heritage they carry.

Every animal is a living link to Florida's earliest ranching traditions.
